Italian green toads in flooded olive grove – Selvanuova

Italian green toads in flooded olive grove

Wildlife in the Mediterranean region has adapted to irregular rainfall. This is particularly true for amphibians, which rely on water bodies for spawning and developing their tadpoles.

Due to the karst limestone substrate, water bodies are extremely scarce in the Alta Murgia area, where Selvanuova’s olive groves are located.

Yesterday and today we had some heavy showers. Green toads (Pseudopidalea viridis), after almost two years of scarce rainfalls, are making the most of a flooded olive grove. Their calls sound very relaxing.
