Limestone pavement micro biotope at Selvanuova

Limestone pavement micro biotope at Selvanuova

Small-scale habitat features play a key role in supporting biodiversity and ecosystem services. At Selvanuova we preserve and increase these important natural elements, as they are valuable assets for the resiliency of an organic farm.

One of our orchards includes a beautiful micro biotope of limestone pavement, a habitat that once covered large areas in and around the Alta Murgia National Park, and that has been lost due to rock crushing for agricultural land improvement. Many wild plant and invertebrates are strictly associated with this habitat.

Another peculiar feature of this orchard, just on the verge of the limestone pavement shown above, is this ‘miracle tre’, half of which has been grafted with almond and half with apricot.
